The Sea Kings Freshmen lost to the Edison Chargers 4-3 on Friday. The game saw the Chargers mount a comeback from an early deficit only to almost be overtaken by the Sea Kings as the game entered the final stretch. As it was, the Chargers held on at the wire to come away with a victory.
The Sea Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Nick DeSousa (‘27) doubled to left field and then Claire O’Kelly (‘28) walked to put two ducks on the pond. Brody Majit (‘28) doubled to drive in both runs and give the Sea Kings an early lead.
Edison started their comeback in the bottom of the third inning when a single cashed in the Dr. Seuss-friendly walk-balk combination that had put a Chargers runner on second base.
The Chargers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning with a rally that, again, started with a free pass. After the leadoff walk, Edison strung together a double and two singles to plate three runs and make the score 3-2, in their favor.
The score was 4-3 after the Chargers tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Edison played with fire by walking the bases loaded with only one out. A sacrifice fly by Luca DiNapoli (‘28) drove in one run for the Sea Kings, but that was all they could muster before the inning ended with the Sea Kings staring at a 4-3 deficit entering the seventh inning.
Jackson Lawrence (‘28) tried to ignite a game-tying rally in the seventh inning with his one-out single, but first base was as far as he would travel before the game ended as a 4-3 Chargers victory.
DeSousa was on base three times for the Sea Kings via the unlikely combination of a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. Two of those three trips on the base paths resulted in runs scored by the Sea Kings right fielder.
Majit also had a double and reached base three times, as he walked twice in addition to his extra-base hit. He drove in two of the Sea Kings four runs. After starting the game at shortstop, Majit relieved starter William Gould (‘27) on the mound and turned in a stellar performance. Majit entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with Chargers runners on second and third bases and one out, and two runs having already been scored during the frame. Majit induced two ground balls and the Sea Kings were out of the inning with no further damage done. For the game, Majit pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two Chargers.
DiNapoli led the Sea Kings with two hits as part of his two for three day that included an RBI.
Lawrence’s seventh inning single extended his on-base streak to eight games.
Although held hitless, Luke Kittleson (‘28) drew two walks and, in doing so, stretched his on-base streak to eleven games.
The Sea Kings Freshmen will host the Pacifica Christian Tritons on Wednesday, April 30.
