The Sea Kings Junior Varsity lost 15-2 in round one of their three-game series with the Newport Harbor Sailors on Tuesday.
The Sea Kings pitchers surrendered only four earned runs, as four untimely errors extended innings for the Sailors throughout the game. The middle innings were particularly fruitful for the Sailors. Newport Harbor posted two, three and three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively, aided by three Sea Kings errors and a passed ball.
In the top of the seventh inning, and leading 8-0, the Sailors tacked on seven more runs, again aided by a Sea Kings’ error.
With the game out of reach, the Sea Kings scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to spoil the shutout, but the game ultimately ended when a Sea Kings’ base runner was cut down at home plate by Newport Harbor’s right fielder.
Max Brengel (‘27) was a bright spot at the plate for the Sea Kings, going two for four on the day with an RBI double. Brengel’s hitting streak stands at four games and his on-base streak is now six games.
Though hitless, Cason Yarnell (‘27) and Cash Burns (‘27) were both able to extend their on-base streaks to six and five games, respectively, with walks.
The Sailors and Sea Kings are back in action against each other on Wednesday, March 19.
