The middle game of their three-game series saw the Sea Kings Freshmen fall to the Newport Harbor Sailors by a final score of 7-2. The Sea Kings’ batters managed only three hits on the day, while the defense committed five errors.
The Sea Kings threatened in the first inning with runners on second and third base, but the Sailors’ starter was able to pitch out of the jam without surrendering a run.
The Sailors got the scoring started in the top of the third inning with two unearned runs.
In the top of the fourth, the Sea Kings tried to fight back, but again, stranded two base runners. The bottom of the frame started inauspiciously with a Sea Kings’ error. The Sailors then strung together four straight singles to tally three runs, making the score 5-0.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Sea Kings rallied when the Sailors’ pitchers issued two bases-loaded walks. The rally ended on a bases-loaded flyout to center field and the score stood at 5-2, Sailors.
Newport Harbor answered in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored two runs, one earned, and both teams went quietly in the seventh. Final score: Sea Kings 2, Sailors 7
JJ Haley (‘28) was a bright spot on offense for the Sea Kings, going one for three with a double and a walk, while stealing two bases.
Claire O’Kelly (‘28) reached base twice for the Sea Kings, as she went one for two and also drew a walk.
The Sea Kings got a great effort out of the bullpen from Jackson Lawrence (‘28). Lawrence entered the game for the Sea Kings in the fourth inning with one out and a runner on second base, and three runs already in for the Sailors. Lawrence put out the fire, exiting the inning with no further damage done. On the day, he ended up allowing only three hits and one earned run over two and two-thirds innings. The lefty struck out four Sailors without issuing a walk.
The Sea Kings Freshmen (3-4-1) finish their season series with Newport Harbor on Friday, March 21 at home.
