Sea Kings Junior Varsity Loses as Offense Stalls

March 19, 2025

The Sea Kings Junior Varsity jumped in front of the Newport Harbor Sailors in the top of the first inning, but could not hold the lead, eventually falling to the Sailors 9-2.

The game started with the Sea Kings’ leadoff hitter reaching on an error. Back-to-back singles by Cason Yarnell (‘27) and Max Brengel (‘27), and a productive groundout by Brady Zenz (‘26), pushed two runs across and the Sea Kings were out to a 2-0 lead. From there, the Sea Kings bats went ice cold and they only produced a single base hit the rest of the way.

Newport Harbor started chipping away at the lead when they manufactured a run in the bottom of the second inning by combining a walk, a hit by pitch and a fielder’s choice.

The bottom of the third inning saw the Sailors take the lead for good when a double and a sacrifice fly produced two runs.

The Sailors played add-on in the fifth inning when a leadoff single was followed by a triple and the score stood at 4-2.

The Sea Kings went to the pen in the sixth inning and the Sailors ambushed the new hurlers, posting five runs and putting the game out of reach.

Brengel’s RBI single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to five games and his on-base streak to seven games.

Yarnell also extended his on-base streak to seven games with his own first inning single.

Ball magnet Crosby Eddy (‘27) was hit by a pitch for the third time in the last two games.

The Sea Kings and Sailors close out their season series on Friday, March 21.
