The Sea Kings Freshmen closed out their season series with the Huntington Beach Oilers with a 9-3 loss on the road.
The Sea Kings got things going in the top of the first inning. Alex Wellmerling (‘27) led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Tait Weissman (‘28). One batter later, Jackson Lawrence (‘28) singled to center field to drive in Wellmerling and the Sea Kings were up 1-0.
The Oilers answered in the bottom of the first inning when a trio of doubles and a walk resulted in three runs.
A leadoff double and three consecutive singles in the bottom of the second inning allowed Huntington Beach to add two more runs to take a 5-1 lead.
The Oilers stretched their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a leadoff double, a passed ball and an RBI ground out.
Huntington Beach continued adding to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, tallying two more runs to make the score 8-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Sea Kings plated a run when Luke Kittleson (‘28) drew a bases-loaded walk and scored a second run when Claire O’Kelly (‘28) grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded.
The Oilers collected their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth frame in similar fashion when a ground out to second base scored an Oilers’ runner from third base.
Weissman extended both his on-base and run-scored streaks to four games, as he finished the game one for one with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.
Leadoff man Wellmerling was one for three with a walk and scored two runs.
Lawrence reached base twice with a single and a walk, and drove in a run.
The Sea Kings Freshmen will face the Los Alamitos Griffins in a three-game series next week starting Tuesday, April 8.
