In a game that slid away as the defensive miscues piled up, the Sea Kings Junior Varsity lost to the Los Alamitos Griffins 10-2.
The trouble for the Sea Kings defense started with the very first Griffins batter of the day, who reached on a error and later came around to score, making the score 1-0 Los Alamitos. Again in the second inning, the Griffins plated a run, this time as a result of two Sea Kings’ errors.
The Sea Kings battled back to tie the score at two apiece in the bottom of the second inning. Prescott Nyman (‘27) and Maxwell Morton (‘27) had back-to-back singles to open the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Sam Healy (‘27) pushed the runners over to second and third bases. Brady Zenz (‘26) then lashed a line drive to center field to plate both Nyman and Morton.
Los Alamitos broke the tie in the top of the third inning when they scored two runs, again aided by an error on the part of the Sea Kings’ defense.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Sea Kings looked to once again rally when Max Brengel’s (‘27) two-out single and Nyman’s walk put two men aboard. This time though, the Sea Kings couldn’t deliver the clutch hit and the score remained 4-2.
The Griffins posted another three runs in the top of the fourth inning, as the Sea Kings aided the cause with two more fielding errors.
The Sea Kings failed to mount any offense the rest of the way, sending the minimum twelve batters to the plate, while the Griffins tacked on three insurance runs to make the final score 10-2.
For the game, the Sea Kings pitchers allowed ten runs, only five of which were earned.
Morton ended the game one for three with a run scored and extended his hitting streak to four games.
Nyman reached base twice going one for two with a walk and scored a run.
Junior Brady Zenz was one for two and drove in the Sea Kings’ two runs.
The Sea Kings Junior Varsity and Los Alamitos Griffins are back in action for game two of the series on Wednesday, April 9.
