The Sea Kings battled back to cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning when they loaded the based and then scored on a passed ball. The inning ended with runners stranded on second and third.

Sea Kings Varsity Loses Low-Scoring Affair

Sea Kings Varsity Loses Low-Scoring Affair

The Newport Harbor Sailors completed a season sweep of the Sea Kings Varsity with a victory on Friday. As has been the case all week, runs were at a premium in the final game of the series. The Sailors were able to scratch out runs in the second and fifth innings on their way to a 2-0 final score.

A leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning was cashed in for a run by the Sailors after their base runner was sacrificed to third base and then scored on a productive groundout to shortstop.

Sea Kings reliever Isaiah Vasquez (‘25) pitched his way into and then out of trouble in the third inning, as the Sailors were able to load the bases with only one out, but failed to score.

Newport Harbor stretched their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning by playing small-ball. After the Sailors leadoff man was hit by a pitch, he reached third base with one out thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. An RBI groundout to second base was then enough to score Newport Harbor’s second run of the game.

The Sea Kings threatened in the top of the seventh inning when pinch hitter Dylan O’Kelly (‘25) greeted the Sailors’ relief pitcher with a leadoff double. After a strikeout, backstop Charlie Kaster (‘26) singled to center field and the Sea Kings were in business with runners on the corners. Those runners ended up stranded as the Sailors’ pitcher induced a pair of ground balls and the game ended with a final score of 2-0.

The Sea Kings deployed a trio of pitchers to great effect, but for the third time in the series, the Sea Kings offense failed to get untracked. Starter Princeton-commit Vincent Menard (‘25) gave way to Vasquez, who then ceded to Will Chavez (‘26). Combined, the Sea Kings’ hurlers allowed only four hits and two runs over six innings.

Second baseman Jack Phillips (‘28) reached base twice for the Sea Kings with a single and a walk.

The Sea Kings Varsity returns to action next week when they host Fountain Valley on Tuesday, March 25.

Sea Kings Junior Varsity on Wrong Side of 6-0 Verdict

The Sea Kings Junior Varsity lost 6-0 to the Newport Harbor Sailors on Friday.

The game was scoreless heading into the third inning when the Sailors posted a trio of runs on a bases-clearing double.

A pair of extra-base hits resulted in another run for the Sailors in the fourth inning and the score stood at 4-0.

Newport Harbor added another run in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out rally featuring a single followed by a double.

The Sea Kings created traffic on the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a double play by the Sailors helped kill off the rally.

In the sixth inning, the Sailors tallied their final run after three walks to start the inning were followed by an RBI fielder’s choice.

The bottom of the sixth frame saw the Sea Kings attempt to mount a rally, as they loaded the bases with no outs against Newport Harbor’s reliever. After two strikeouts, the final Sea Kings’ batter of the inning grounded out to extinguish the threat.

Max Brengel (‘27) had a pair of singles for the Sea Kings to extend his hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to eight games.

The Sea Kings got great work out of the bullpen from Kyle Womack (‘27), who entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Womack was able to choke off that rally, surrendering only one run and finished his day with one hit and no earned runs allowed over two innings.

Sea Kings Varsity Wastes Pitching Gem, Lose 1-0

Sea Kings Varsity Wastes Pitching Gem, Lose 1-0

The Sea Kings Varsity was shut out for the second straight game, losing to the Newport Harbor Sailors 1-0, as the Sailors capitalized on a seventh inning error to score the game’s only run.

Sea Kings starter Stevie Jones (‘26) was masterful on the bump, throwing a complete game, while allowing only three hits, striking out six and walking none.

Jones took a one-hitter into the top of the seventh inning before Newport Harbor struck with a one-out double to left field. The Sailors’ next batter hit a ground ball for what should have been the second out, but an error allowed the Sailors to fill up first and second bases. Jones’ next pitch induced a ground ball to second base for a 4-3 putout, which, absent the error, would have ended the Sailors’ threat. Newport Harbor’s next batter took advantage of the four-out inning and lined a single into center field to drive in the game’s sole run.

Despite generating only two hits on the day, the Sea Kings did have chances to score in both the second and third innings. In the second inning, the Sea Kings coupled a two-out walk and a single with a wild pitch to place runners on second and third, but couldn’t bring the men home. Similarly, in the third inning, the Sea Kings had traffic on the bases after a single and a Sailors’ error, but ended up stranding the runners.

Third basemen William Chiechi (‘25) lead off the fourth inning by being hit by a pitch and extended his season-long on-base streak to nine games in the process.

By giving up no earned runs, Jones (3-1) saw his ERA drop to 0.68 on the season. He sports a 6.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio along with a WHIP of 0.78 for the campaign.

The Sea Kings Varsity and Newport Harbor will face each other for the last time this season on Friday, March 21.

Sea Kings Junior Varsity Loses as Offense Stalls

The Sea Kings Junior Varsity jumped in front of the Newport Harbor Sailors in the top of the first inning, but could not hold the lead, eventually falling to the Sailors 9-2.

The game started with the Sea Kings’ leadoff hitter reaching on an error. Back-to-back singles by Cason Yarnell (‘27) and Max Brengel (‘27), and a productive groundout by Brady Zenz (‘26), pushed two runs across and the Sea Kings were out to a 2-0 lead. From there, the Sea Kings bats went ice cold and they only produced a single base hit the rest of the way.

Newport Harbor started chipping away at the lead when they manufactured a run in the bottom of the second inning by combining a walk, a hit by pitch and a fielder’s choice.

The bottom of the third inning saw the Sailors take the lead for good when a double and a sacrifice fly produced two runs.

The Sailors played add-on in the fifth inning when a leadoff single was followed by a triple and the score stood at 4-2.

The Sea Kings went to the pen in the sixth inning and the Sailors ambushed the new hurlers, posting five runs and putting the game out of reach.

Brengel’s RBI single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to five games and his on-base streak to seven games.

Yarnell also extended his on-base streak to seven games with his own first inning single.

Ball magnet Crosby Eddy (‘27) was hit by a pitch for the third time in the last two games.

Cold Bats, Untimely Errors Doom Sea Kings Freshmen

The middle game of their three-game series saw the Sea Kings Freshmen fall to the Newport Harbor Sailors by a final score of 7-2. The Sea Kings’ batters managed only three hits on the day, while the defense committed five errors.

The Sea Kings threatened in the first inning with runners on second and third base, but the Sailors’ starter was able to pitch out of the jam without surrendering a run.

The Sailors got the scoring started in the top of the third inning with two unearned runs.

In the top of the fourth, the Sea Kings tried to fight back, but again, stranded two base runners. The bottom of the frame started inauspiciously with a Sea Kings’ error. The Sailors then strung together four straight singles to tally three runs, making the score 5-0.

With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Sea Kings rallied when the Sailors’ pitchers issued two bases-loaded walks. The rally ended on a bases-loaded flyout to center field and the score stood at 5-2, Sailors.

Newport Harbor answered in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored two runs, one earned, and both teams went quietly in the seventh. Final score: Sea Kings 2, Sailors 7

JJ Haley (‘28) was a bright spot on offense for the Sea Kings, going one for three with a double and a walk, while stealing two bases.

Claire O’Kelly (‘28) reached base twice for the Sea Kings, as she went one for two and also drew a walk.

The Sea Kings got a great effort out of the bullpen from Jackson Lawrence (‘28). Lawrence entered the game for the Sea Kings in the fourth inning with one out and a runner on second base, and three runs already in for the Sailors. Lawrence put out the fire, exiting the inning with no further damage done. On the day, he ended up allowing only three hits and one earned run over two and two-thirds innings. The lefty struck out four Sailors without issuing a walk.

The Sea Kings Freshmen (3-4-1) finish their season series with Newport Harbor on Friday, March 21 at home.

Sea Kings Varsity Drops Conference Opener

Sea Kings Varsity Drops Conference Opener

The Sea Kings Varsity got a taste of its own medicine, as the Newport Harbor Sailors held the Sea Kings hitters in check on their way to a 4-0 victory in both teams’ conference opener. The Sea Kings only sent twenty-five batters to the dish over the course of seven innings and had a runner in scoring position only twice throughout the game.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Sailors cracked the seal with a two-out, two-run RBI triple.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Sea Kings tried to strike back when William Chiechi (‘25) led off with a double, but he was gunned down at the plate two batters later when he tried to score on Jackson McDonald’s (‘25) two-out line drive single to right field. This would prove to be the Sea Kings’ best opportunity to score on the day.

The Sea Kings pitched their way into trouble in the bottom of the six inning when a one-out walk was followed by a hit batsman. After a fly out, the Sailors were able to cash in those two runs with back-to-back, two-out singles. This made the score 4-0 Sailors and that is how the game would ultimately end.

Brady Gadol’s (‘25) single in the sixth inning extended his season-long, on-base streak to eight games, a streak that is matched by Chiechi.

Although held hitless, both Marc Solomon (‘25) and Princeton-commit Vincent Menard (‘25) were able to stretch their on-base streaks to seven games with walks.

The Sea Kings Varsity will host Newport Harbor for game two of the three-game series on Wednesday, March 19.

Self-Inflicted Wounds Result in Loss for Sea Kings Junior Varsity

The Sea Kings Junior Varsity lost 15-2 in round one of their three-game series with the Newport Harbor Sailors on Tuesday.

The Sea Kings pitchers surrendered only four earned runs, as four untimely errors extended innings for the Sailors throughout the game. The middle innings were particularly fruitful for the Sailors. Newport Harbor posted two, three and three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively, aided by three Sea Kings errors and a passed ball.

In the top of the seventh inning, and leading 8-0, the Sailors tacked on seven more runs, again aided by a Sea Kings’ error.

With the game out of reach, the Sea Kings scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to spoil the shutout, but the game ultimately ended when a Sea Kings’ base runner was cut down at home plate by Newport Harbor’s right fielder.

Max Brengel (‘27) was a bright spot at the plate for the Sea Kings, going two for four on the day with an RBI double. Brengel’s hitting streak stands at four games and his on-base streak is now six games.

Though hitless, Cason Yarnell (‘27) and Cash Burns (‘27) were both able to extend their on-base streaks to six and five games, respectively, with walks.

The Sailors and Sea Kings are back in action against each other on Wednesday, March 19.

Cold Bats, Untimely Errors Doom Sea Kings Freshmen

Sea Kings Freshmen Heavyweight Battle Ends in 11-11 Tie

In a game that saw both teams exchange haymakers throughout, the Sea Kings Freshmen scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure an 11-11 tie with the Newport Harbor Sailors.

After the Sailors were held scoreless in the top of the first inning, JJ Haley (‘28) got the scoring started for the Sea Kings with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame.

The Sailors’ clean up man played “anything you can do, I can do better” and lead off the top of the second inning with his own big fly to tie the score at one.

In the bottom of the second, the Sailors’ pitcher induced three ground balls to start the inning. Unfortunately for him, an error on the Newport Harbor shortstop allowed the inning to continue, and continue it did. After the error, Max Nguyen (‘28) drew a four-pitch walk and that brought Haley to the plate again. Just as in the first inning, Haley got ahead in the count and made the Sailors pay, hitting a three-run home run to center field. And just like that, the Sea Kings were back in front 4-1. But the offenses were just getting started.

In the top of the third inning, Newport Harbor strung together back-to-back doubles and a single to post two runs and close the gap to 4-3.

Sensing the slugfest in progress, the Sea Kings answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Luke Kittleson (‘28) lead off the frame with a double and then starting pitcher Brody Majit (‘28) was hit by a pitch. Jackson Lawrence (‘28) then singled to drive in Kittleson. Sea Kings backstop Claire O’Kelly (‘28) attempted to sacrifice the runners over to second and third, but instead earned a bunt single to load the bases. Majit then scored the second run of the inning when the Sailors’ pitcher balked. To add insult to injury, Lawrence then scored on a passed ball. The third inning ended with the score Sea Kings 7, Sailors 3.

The top of the fourth inning saw the Sailors score a run on a bases-loaded walk. At this point in the game, both teams’ arms were apparently tired from swinging their bats, and the scoring paused for the next one and a half innings. This brief respite only served to set up the fireworks that ended the game.

In the top of the sixth inning, facing a three run deficit, the Sailors batted around and scored four runs to take the lead.

The Sea Kings had plenty more fight in them and in the bottom of the sixth inning, they posted two runs when both Kittleson and Majit hit clutch two-out RBI doubles.

The bell rang for the seventh and final round to start with the score sitting at Sea Kings 9, Sailors 8. By taking advantage of three walks, the Sailors were able take the lead in the top half of the frame when they scored three runs despite producing only one hit.

O’Kelly lead off the bottom of the seventh inning for the Sea Kings and was gifted an error by the Sailors’ third baseman. Tait Weissman (‘28) followed this with a single to center filed to put the tying runners on base. Man of the match Haley then strode to the plate and laced an RBI single into left field to plate O’Kelly and draw the Sea Kings to within one run. Following a strikeout, the Sea Kings were down to their last out with the tying run on third base and the winning run on second base. Number three hitter Colt Fyke (‘28) quickly found himself down 0-2 in the count and the Sea Kings were down to their last strike. On the next pitch, Weissman was able to score from third base for his second run of the game, and the Sea Kings had tied it up.

The game was finalized as a tie, 11-11, at the end of seven innings.

The Sea Kings offense featured many stars on the day, none more so than Haley, who finished four for five, with two home runs, three runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base.

Out of the clean-up spot, Kittleson went three for four, with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

Lawrence and O’Kelly gave the Sea Kings great production from the bottom half of the batting order, as they both went two for four with a double and a run scored.

O’Kelly’s starting battery-mate Majit ended his day at the plate with a line of one for three with a double, a run scored and an RBI. He also reached base when he was hit by a pitch in the third inning.

The Sea Kings Freshmen (3-3-1) return to action Wednesday, March 19 for the middle game of this week’s three-game set versus Newport Harbor.

Sea Kings Varsity Rallies for 3-2 Victory

Sea Kings Varsity Rallies for 3-2 Victory

After relinquishing a one-run lead in the top half of the frame, the Sea Kings Varsity rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a 3-2 victory over the Capo Valley Christian Eagles. A quarter of the way through the season, the Sea Kings record now stands at 6-1.

The Sea Kings played small-ball in the first inning to establish a 1-0 lead. Leadoff man Brady Gadol (‘25) walked, then stole second and was sacrifice bunted to third by Ganon Overfelt (‘25). Team RBI leader, Princeton-commit Vincent Menard (‘25) then did his job and drove in Gadol with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Both teams were then held scoreless until the decisive sixth inning.

Over the course of the games, Capo Valley Christian produced a fair amount of traffic on the bases and they were finally able to break through for two runs in the top of the sixth inning when they strung together a walk and two singles. Junior Will Chavez (‘26) was summoned from the pen to squelch the rally with two outs and a runner on first and promptly hung a three-pitch, backwards K on the first batter hit faced.

Facing a one run deficit with only six outs to overcome it, Gadol wasted no time. He lead off the bottom of the six inning with a double and again advanced to third base thanks to an Overfelt sacrifice bunt. From there, Menard did what Menard does. His single into left field drove in Gadol with the tying run. One out later, it was third baseman William Chiechi’s (‘25) turn to play hero. His two-out line drive into left field drove home Menard with what turned out to be the winning run. Chiechi’s single also had the benefit of extending his season-long on-base streak to seven games.

Chavez returned to the bump to shut the door in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles weren’t out of fight quite yet. After two outs to start the frame, Capo Valley Christian put runners on first and second base, but a fly out to center fielder Gadol ended the game and sealed the victory for the Sea Kings.

Chavez picked up the win for his efforts in relief of starter Stevie Jones (‘26). Jones finished the game with eight strikeouts against only one walk.

Menard extended his hitting streak to six games, and totaled two RBI’s and a run scored for the game. Designated hitter Marc Solomon (‘26) also stretched his hitting streak to six games when he singled in the first inning.

Gadol, once-again, ignited the Sea Kings offense out of his leadoff spot. The senior has reached base in every game this season and has scored a run in six straight. For the game, he finished one for two plus a walk, and scored two runs. The Sea Kings’ all-time leading thief also stole a base for the fourth straight game.

The Sea Kings Varsity now hits the road to face the San Clemente Tritons on March 14.
